18. #womenwriters #readwomen Crystal Warren recommends…

‘I struggled to pick just one book to recommend. How to choose just one writer when I love so many. So I ended up going with an anthology. BREAKING the silence : a century of South African women’s poetry, edited by Cecily Lockett (Parklands : Ad Donker, 1990).

This is a wonderful collection of poems. It brings together early poets such as Alice Buckton, Mary Byron, Mary Morison Webster, well known figures such as Ingrid de Kok, Ingrid Jonker, Ruth Miller, Gcina Mhlophe and Joan Metelerkamp, as well as introducing me to several poets whose work I had not read.’

Crystals poetry collection is called Bodies of Glass (2004 Aerial Publishing). a second collection Exodus is due out later this year.
